Vtg 1920s Favorite Piqua Ware #8 Cast Iron Waffle Maker Low Base Restored Works
Up for sale is a beautiful vintage Favorite Piqua Ware #8 cast iron waffle maker. On the opposite side of the cooking surface of the paddles is an embossed font "FAVORITE PIQUA WARE" followed by their logo and fonts consisting of We Guarantee Favorite Stoves and Ranges, Best In The World, with a No. 8 on the bottom of each paddle.
The base is a low base style which is compatible with today's electric stoves, both glass top and coiled along with induction. It could be used on a gas range, but the high base model is more suited for the gas range. The paddles have a joint which allow them to work together with the base (with a bail handle) so all 3 pieces function as a whole. This waffle iron has been stripped down to the bare metal using industry standards and re-seasoned in the oven 3 times using Crisco so it is all ready to be used. Color: Waffle iron is a nice chocolate brown from the initial seasonings (3) done after stripping it down to a gun metal gray. At this stage, it should not look black until it has been used over a period of time. Any piece that looks shiny black in the listing has not gone through this process. My photos show this waffle iron in daylight which more accurately reflect its true color as well.
Please note that it will look closer to black in your kitchen under certain lighting conditions. Excellent for most range types including induction. Note: This can be used on a glass stove top, just don't drag it or drop it on your stove top as you may cause damage to not only the waffle iron, but your stove top! Please consult your stove owner's manual if you have concerns. That said, I always allowed adequate time for skillet to heat up before using and never used anything more than medium heat on my glass stove top without issue.
How to use: This waffle maker should be heated on medium heat alternating the handles for 2 minute intervals for a total of 8-10 minutes to avoid your waffles sticking. Test with a droplet of water and if it fizzles and evaporates, it is ready to go.
Apply your seasoning either by cooking spray or with a pastry brush (melted butter, lard, or vegetable shortening-your choice) before adding your waffle batter. Cook for 2 minutes the first side, then turn the handles using an oven heat resistant mitt or glove, and allow another 90 seconds or so until it is done. Please bare in mind, all stoves cook differently and is dependent on your altitude as well. These are antiques, but work well if used correctly!
Width from edge of handle openings to top of low base unit: 12 3/8. Width from side to side on low base: 10 1/4.
Cooking Surface of paddle: 7 1/2. Height of Low Base Unit: 1 5/8. Pre-Packaged Weight: 8 pounds 4.2 ounces.
Cast iron waffle makers in general are increasingly rare, especially in this condition. It was acquired with old seasoning, and the old seasoning and rust completely removed before it was seasoned. This is truly a rare find! This waffle iron has been totally stripped down to the raw metal by a lye bath soak, followed up with a 50/50 vinegar/water solution to neutralize the piece. It was then washed down with water, a scouring pad, and Dawn (blue) mild dish detergent.
Once it was thoroughly dried, it was seasoned 3 times by the method recommended by the Wagner-Griswold Society along with the Cast Iron Collector web site. I used Crisco in this seasoning as it is tried and true and once it reached it's smoke point, formed a nice hardened surface (it's the black carbon you see in old seasoned good cookware) which forms the non-stick surface. Before seasoning each time and once the iron was sufficiently warmed up, the oil was wiped on and then off again, thus leaving the thin surface of oil which is all that is required when properly seasoning cast iron.
This produces a piece that isn't gummy or wet, but is nice and dry. This waffle maker is all ready to use and will continue to season the longer it is used. I have seasoned a number of pans using Crisco after doing the flax oil method and find it is much easier to do, works better with the heated skillets for even application, and stays intact after correctly cleaning the pans after each use. If you have changed your mind about the item, please let me know to cancel and I can do this without any more action on your part. If defects are found, I note them in the conditions section. I try and find everything, but I might miss something. I strive for excellent customer service and want my my buyers to be satisfied! Thanks again for stopping by!
